System Training Manuals

FCS System Training Manuals (STMs) create a foundation from which to build the Training and Qualification programs. Our System Training Manuals do more than simply describe how your facility is designed. They describe the basic principles required to understand the systems and equipment, and the rationale behind its design and operation. In other words, rather than simply documenting what is in the plant, our manuals explain why it is there, and how it works.

Based on our experience, FCS will recommend preliminary topics and outlines for the STMs. During the project kickoff meeting, FCS will then make the necessary adjustments to our preliminary topic list to suit your needs.

Our STMs are supported by high-quality custom graphics of your equipment and systems. This makes the manuals ideal for employee training and qualifications. The site-specific STMs are also valuable reference documents for day-to-day operation of the plant. They can also serve as the basis of the overall training and qualification programs.

FCS designs and develops STMs based upon information gathered onsite, including through personnel interviews; vendor manuals; plant walk-downs; site P&IDs; DCS documentation; control logic diagrams; HMI screens; DCS screens; and other available material and our experience.

FCS-developed STMs are written in a consistent format to ensure that they can be easily used. Our format uses consistently numbered sections that allow the user to quickly and easily find the desired information without having to “hunt” through a lengthy and disorganized document.

TYPICAL SYSTEM TRAINING MANUAL FORMAT

Objectives (Section 1.1) – This subsection lists the learning objectives that the trainee should be able to satisfy after successfully studying the STM.

System Purpose and Scope (Section 1.2) – The purpose of the system is described in this subsection. The scope will outline the systems and components to be covered in the module and define the boundaries of those systems as well.

System Overview (Section 1.3) – Provides an overview of the system and major components covered. Fluid flowpaths and the design features of each system are discussed.  FCS will provide a multi-color, operational flow diagram to show each system and major subsystem flowpath.

This section describes the design characteristics of each major component in the system and their function. Also, as applicable, subsystems and subcomponents will be described in detail. For example, the lubricating oil system associated with the turbine will be covered in detail.

  • Each major component of the system is identified in this section.
  • A description of the function, design and configuration of each component is provided.
  • Operating limits and parameters are identified that are relevant to safe operation of the component or system.
  • Simplified diagrams of components and subsystems will be included as appropriate to support understanding the information presented.
  • Photographs of the components with call-outs will be included as available.

This section discusses the component controls and system process controls provided.

  • The layout of the controls and control philosophy for individual components is described.
  • The controls section will be divided into local (including HMI) and control room (DCS) controls.
  • Separating the local and control room controls makes the materials more specific, and makes it easier to present the information in separate plant operator and control room operator training courses if desired.
  • DCS screens, control panels and local control photographs will be included.
  • Simplified control diagrams showing the control logic will be included where the complexity warrants.
